Homework for the week of January 31 - February 5, 2021 - Due on Friday, February 5, 2021

Happy Sunday!

This week our homework is going to be due on Friday, February 5, so you will have a full 5 days to complete it.

Spelling Tasks: We can recognize and spell words with ng, nk, nt, pt, sk, and st spelling patterns.

Friday, February 5 will be the day of our next spelling test. This week we will complete all 12 words on our spelling test. The words can be found below:

  1. Read your spelling word list and make sure you understand the meaning of each word.

  2. This week's spelling task is a bit silly. Write each word two times with your dominant hand (the hand you normally write with). Write each word two times with your non-dominant hand. If you can write with both hands then you are lucky for this one.

  3. Choose 10 of your spelling words, and write a sentence for each word. Put a circle around the spelling word in the sentence. Try to challenge yourself and see if you can use two words in one sentence.
Reading Tasks: We can read silently with increasing confidence and accuracy.
  1. 10 minutes of reading is expected to be completed every night.
Math Tasks: We can sort numbers, using one or more than one attribute
  1. Complete the three different number sorts below in your homework notebook. These one include 1-, 2-, and 3-digit numbers, which is a bit different than what we completed in class. Remember, if you cannot fit a number into your Venn diagram, cross it out.

  2. Create your own number sort with 10 numbers to sort. Solve your number sort to show me the answers.
Please let me know if you have any questions, and have a wonderful week!

January 28 - Learning Update

 Hello Team,

We managed to accomplish quite a bit this week even though it was a short week. We were sad to say goodbye to a few of our fellow team members, but we know they will be amazing next door in Room 7.

Language Arts - This week in Language Arts we completed our procedural snowperson writing and drawing. We will continue with procedural writing for the next few weeks.

Math - This week in Math, we worked on sorting numbers. We are very excited to start multiplication next week!

Science - This week we wrapped up our Rocks and Minerals unit. We created a final project for the unit and some students presented theirs this week. Others will present next week and then we will begin our unit on Building Things and Testing Materials.

Social Studies - This week we discussed what the terms homelessness and shelter mean to different people. We are excited about our presentation from the Mustard Seed, which will happen on Monday afternoon next week.

Health - In health class, we continue to look at the area of wellness choices.

Remember to wear your formal uniform on Monday next week. I am confident that we will be able to earn a loop on our school display for our class. Next week is a full 5-day week. Remember to see my last post in regards to Valentine's Day if you would like to participate in that.

Have a wonderful 3-day weekend! Stay safe and healthy team!

Valentine's Day

Hello!

This year, Valentine's Day celebrations are going to look a little bit different. Our lovely learning leaders who have been chosen to move to Room 7 will be handing out cards in their new classroom. Please stay posted for your list on your new classroom blog.

If you would like to participate here is what you need to know:

  1. The celebration will take place on February 10, 2021.
  2. Students are permitted to bring a special treat for themselves but unfortunately, they cannot bring anything to share.
  3. You must send a Valentine's Day card to everybody in the class (the list of names is posted below).
  4. Please do not attach any extra "treat" to the card (i.e. no pencils, candies, etc.). Please only hand out a paper card.
  5. Cards need to be brought to the school, ready to hand out NO LATER THAN FEBRUARY 5. This ensures that the cards will have time to be put into quarantine before they are handed out. Any late cards will not be allowed to be handed out.
All Valentine's Day activities are optional. If you have any questions, please let me know.

January 15, 2021 - Learning Update

 Hello Team,

What a wonderful first week back! Our in-person learning was amazing. We started some new exciting projects and really enjoyed being back together.

Language Arts - This week in Language Arts we focused on our goals for the new year. We also took a closer look at a children's book called Sulwe and completed some activities around the key themes of the story.

Math - This week we worked on analyzing and creating bar graphs.

Science - This week we continued with our Rocks and Minerals unit. We took a look at how we can break down rocks to form soil. We also looked into what the words erosion and weathering mean and some examples of them.

Social Studies - This week we began our long-anticipated Teacher For the Afternoon activity. Students are working in groups to create a platform for one of their group members to have the chance to be elected to be the teacher for the afternoon in our classroom. We completed activities such as creating campaign posters and campaign speeches this week. Our election will happen next week.

Health - In health class, we continue to look at the area of wellness choices.

Remember to wear your formal uniform on Monday next week. Please also remember to order fun lunch for your student, if you would like. This can be done here. Orders for this month's lunch must be in by Saturday, January 16.

Have a wonderful weekend! Please stay safe and healthy!

January 8, 2021 - Learning Update

 Happy Friday!

What a wonderful week of online learning! I want to thank all of the students, and their support teams at home for helping and making the week flow so smoothly. The week was very successful and it would not have been possible without all of the amazing work that everyone put in. I can hardly wait to start in-person learning again at Le Roi Daniels on Monday! Below is a recap of the concepts covered during our week of online learning.

Language Arts - This week in language arts we focused on rewriting "boring" or "basic" stories using our knowledge of triple scoop words, similes and using our senses. We also talked about how unique we all are and created personalized "I am" designs.

Math - We have tackled several different subtraction and addition word problems this week and also practiced our estimation and number sense skills.

Science - We opted to teach Social Studies online this week so there is no update for Science.

Social Studies - This week we reviewed some cultural elements from two of the countries we are studying this year, Tunisia and India. We looked at their traditional clothing and different foods that are eaten in these countries. For our final task students created either a party menu or a party scene focusing on one of the two cultural elements or choosing to look at both.

Health - We did not cover any Health topics this week.

That is all for today! I am looking forward to a fun first week back after our Winter Break! Our homework will not begin until Sunday, January 17. I will see everybody in their formal uniform on Monday, January 11.

Homework Checklist for Monday, January 11, 2021

 Hello Room 8 Team,

I thought I would post a checklist of homework that was completed during online learning week and is expected to be handed in on Monday morning. I have divided the checklist into the 3 different subjects that were covered. I am not in charge of Phys. Ed., French or Music activities so I am unsure if there is any required homework to submit for those subjects.

  • Rewriting of 4 - 6 sentences from the story "You Be You" using triple scoop words, senses and similes
  • I Am design
Social Studies:
  • Answers for Tunisia page about clothing (we did not have time to finish the food page during class. Students may complete those questions on their own if they would like)
  • Answers for the India pages about clothing and food
  • Either a drawing of your party scene or your party menu
Math:
  • Tuesday's 2 word problems solved
  • Wednesday's 2 word problems solved

Math Word Problem for Friday, January 8, 2021

Balance the seesaw by making both sides equal to each other. These are the weights of the animals:

    •  Mouse – 1

    • Turtle – 2

    • Rabbit – 3

    • Bobcat – 4

    • Wolf – 5

    • Deer – 6

    • Bear – 7

Here is an example:

7 + 3 = 5 + 4 + 1

10 = 10

I can put a bear and a rabbit on one side which will equal 10. On the other side I can put a wolf, a bobcat, and a mouse which will equal 10.

Try and solve the problem in more than 2 different ways. Use pictures, words, and numbers like I have in my example!

Math Word Problems for Thursday, January 7

Isaac had time over the winter break to count all of the soccer games that he won each year in school. In kindergarten, Isaac won 55 games. In grade 1 Isaac won 155 games. In grade 2 Isaac won 255 games. How many games did Isaac win altogether? Use pictures, numbers and words to show your thinking. Show 2 or more ways to solve the problem.

Mr. Jiminez saw that the soccer wins created a pattern when you look at how they change every year. What is the pattern? AND if the pattern continues, how many games will Isaac win in grade 3? Show your thinking. You only have to solve this problem 1 way!
