March 26, 2021 - Learning Update

Good Afternoon Everyone!

We had an amazing final week before Spring Break. I was seriously impressed with how hard everyone worked this week. The students should all be very proud of themselves. Here is a recap of the learning activities we completed this week.

Language Arts - This week in Language Arts we completed our shape poems about kindness. Pictures are posted to the blog under "Student Work". They turned out really well. After Spring Break they will be displayed in the library area for the entire month of April.

Math - This week in Math, we reviewed different things that we have learned so far this year. Patterns, graphing, and number sense were some things we reviewed.

Science - This week in Science we continued with our Building and Testing Materials unit. Our first challenge was to build a pencil holder for Miss. S's desk that can hold 3 pencils and 1 pair of scissors. We worked on researching some bridges as well this week and also participated in an in-school field trip this morning where we built our own towers.

Social Studies - This week we continued working on our major Social Studies Cultural Research Project. We will continue to work on the project for the next few weeks.

Health - In health class, we continued looking at the area of relationships.

There will be no homework over Spring Break, however, I encourage students to continue to read, use Epic, and go on Mathletics if they would like. Your playground project is also due back to school the week after Spring Break. It would be a great idea to double check that your project looks amazing before you bring it back to Room 8.

I will see everyone back at school on Tuesday, April 6th. I hope everyone has a fabulous Spring Break. Please be safe and wash your hands. I would hate for anybody to get sick or have to isolate during their time off.

Homework for the Week of March 21 - 26th, 2021 - due on Friday, March 26, 20

Hello!

This week our homework will be due on Friday, March 26! Remember, if you finish it before then, feel free to hand it in early. Friday of this week will be a casual day, we are asking students to wear bright colours to celebrate Holi.

A lot of students are not completing all of the homework tasks that I have assigned so I would like to remind you to double-check that you have completed all of the tasks for each week before you hand in your homework. I have highlighted tasks that were missed by some people last week.

Spelling Tasks: We can recognize and spell words with soft "c" (ce, ci, cy) and hard "c" spelling patterns.

Friday, March 26 will be the day of our next spelling test. The words can be found below.

  1. Read your spelling word list and make sure you understand the meaning of each word.

  2. Complete 2 of the following activities. You get to choose which ones you complete.

  3. Choose 10 of your spelling words, and write a sentence for each word. Put a circle around the spelling word in the sentence. Try to challenge yourself and see if you can use two words in one sentence.
Reading Tasks: We can read silently with increasing confidence and accuracy.
  1. 20 minutes of reading is expected to be completed every night.

  2. Write about the genre of the book(s) you are reading. What genre is it and what makes you think that? If it could be more than one genre, which other genres could it be?
Math Tasks: We can demonstrate an understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  1. Choose 5 problems from each column to solve. You must choose 5 addition problems and 5 subtraction problems. Once you think you have found out what the triangle equals I would like you to put that number back into the equation and check your work just to make sure you are right!

  2. Write two of your own word problems and solve them. They can use addition, subtraction, multiplication or division. If you need some ideas you can look back at past homework assignments.
Please let me know if you have any questions, and have a wonderful week!

March 19, 2021 - Learning Update

 Good Afternoon Everyone!

We managed to squeeze in a lot of fun learning activities this week in Room 8. Below is our learning update!

Language Arts - This week in Language Arts we started to work on our next character project relating to kindness. We focused on how we can be kind to others and to ourselves.

Math - This week in Math, we learned how to solve algebra equations. We discovered different strategies to solve the mystery number in each equation.

Science - This week in Science we continued with our Building and Testing Materials unit. We wrapped up the testing portion of the unit and moved onto the building section. We looked at the difference between human-made and natural structures and we started to build our first project, a pencil holder that can hold 3 pencils and 1 pair of scissors. We will continue to build this next week.

Social Studies - This week we began our major Social Studies Cultural Research Project. Each student chose a country they would like to research. They will answer questions about their country and compare it to the 4 countries we have been learning about all year, Ukraine, Tunisia, India and Peru. We will be working on this project for the next few weeks.

Health - In health class, we continued looking at the area of relationships. This week we looked at appropriate ways to express our feelings.

Do not forget that the virtual bookfair is still happening if you would like to purchase anything. Friday next week will also be a casual day to celebrate Holi. Please see the email from Mrs. Taylor for more information. Have a fantastic weekend everyone.

Accessible Playground Projects Ideas and Examples

Below is a collection of pictures of different accessible playgrounds both projects and real-life examples. There is also a copy of the letter that was sent home at the bottom of the post. Remember your playground project is due on Wednesday, April 7, 2021. Please do not bring it to school before Monday, April 4.

Below is a copy of the handout letter sent home on Tuesday, March 2.

Hello, Room 8 Families!
I am sending home a letter today to let you know about an at-home project that I would like your student to work on. For our current Science unit, we have been working on building and testing materials and designs. For our at-home project, I would like your student to design and build a playground. The playground needs to have at least 3 features (i.e. swings, a slide, monkey bars, etc.). At least 2 of the features have to be accessible for children who have mobility difficulties (i.e. they have to use a wheelchair or crutches to get around). We want to make sure our playground is inclusive and accessible for everyone as we do not want anyone to feel left out. Please check the blog for pictures, examples and ideas.

I do not want the playgrounds to be larger than our school desks, as some students will have to bring their projects to school on the bus. Please use items found at your house, there is no need to purchase anything. Supplies you can use include but are not limited to: straws, pipe cleaners, paper, tinfoil, egg cartons, or cardboard. Playground models will be due to school on Wednesday, April 7, 2021. Please do not send them before April 4, 2021.

If you have any questions, please let me know!
Sincerely,
Miss. Shevchuk
