April 30, 2021 - Learning Update

 Hello, Room 8 Team!

We had an action-packed short week here in Room 8. Below is our learning update for the week.

Language Arts - This week in Language Arts we worked on making our stories better. We looked at creating exciting beginnings and adding detail to the characters in our stories.

Math - This week in Math, we began looking at measuring how long it takes us to complete things. We focused on using non-standard units this week.

Science
- This week in Science we began our final unit, Hearing and Sound. We learned what the word onomatopoeia means and created a piece of writing using our new knowledge.

Social Studies - This week we continued working on our major Social Studies Cultural Research Project. We are going to wrap up this project in 1 week and begin presenting them to the class.

Health - In health class, we continued looking at the area of relationships. This week we looked at ways that we can be inclusive of others.

Have a wonderful 2-day weekend. I will see everyone back at school on Monday, May 3rd in our formal uniforms. I cannot believe that it is already May. Remember, Wednesday is HATS ON FOR MENTAL HEALTH. That means you can wear a hat with your uniform. This is not a casual day. Stay safe and wash your hands.

Reading Tasks: We can read silently with increasing confidence and accuracy. We can identify different story elements in books that we are reading and write about them.
  1. 20 minutes of reading is expected to be completed every night.

  2. I would like you to write about the beginning, middle and end of a story you are reading. If you do not know the ending yet, I would like you to guess what happens.

This writing should be at least 5 sentences in length.
Math Tasks: We can write about fractions that we see and compare those fractions.
  1. Look at the group of dogs below and write fractions about them. I would like you to write a paragraph, similar to our pizza project, with 5 sentences that have information and fractions about the group. I would like you to try and include at least 3 fractions in your writing. Below are my two example sentences.

There are 9 dogs in this group of dogs.  of the dogs have grey on their fur.

  2. Solve the fraction secret code below using the key.

  3. Choose 3 of the following questions and estimate the answer. Then solve your chosen questions to see how close your estimate was. You do not have to do all of the questions, but you can if you want.

This week our homework will be due on Friday, April 23! Remember, if you finish it before then, feel free to hand it in early.

Spelling Tasks: We can recognize and spell words with ly, less, ness, ful, and ily suffixes.

Friday, April 23 will be the day of our next spelling test. The words can be found below.

  1. Read your spelling word list and make sure you understand the meaning of each word.

  2. Complete 2 of the following activities. I would like you to try and choose 2 that you have not completed before.

  3. Use all 12 of your spelling words, and write a sentence for each word. Put a circle around the spelling word in the sentence. Try to challenge yourself and see if you can use two words in one sentence.
Reading Tasks: We can read silently with increasing confidence and accuracy. We can identify different story elements in books that we are reading and write about them.
  1. 20 minutes of reading is expected to be completed every night.

  2. I would like you to choose one book that you are reading and write about the characters in the book. Write about 2 - 3 of the characters in the book, giving details about what they look like and how they act.

Write about the setting in the book, where and when does the story take place? Maybe your story has multiple settings.

If you know what the problem is in the book, I would like you to write about this. If you know what the solution is in the book, I would like you to write about this. If you do not know the solution, I would like you to predict how you think the characters will solve the problem.
Math Tasks: We can draw different fractions and compare different fractions.
  1. Draw the following fractions in your homework notebook. Please write the fraction next to your drawing (similar to what we did our Math notebooks last week). I have attached the fraction poster for ideas. Challenge yourself to try and draw each fraction in more than one way.

  2. Compare the following fractions to each other using our alligator symbols (<, >, and =). Hint: It might help you to draw out the fraction when it is not drawn out.

  3. Solve the following fraction word problem. Show your work using pictures and a word sentence.

Miss. Shevchuk has one piece of paper to put into the scrap paper bin but 4 different students would like to use it. Draw a picture of at least one way that she could split the paper between all of them. What fraction of the paper would each student receive?

  4. Bonus Task: Write your own fraction word problem for me to solve!

Please let me know if you have any questions, and have a wonderful week!

April 9, 2021 - Learning Update

Hello, Room 8 Team!

We had a fabulous week back after Spring Break. The playground projects that everyone has brought in are amazing. I have posted photos of the projects on the Student Work page of the blog. Below is our learning update for the week!

Language Arts - This week in Language Arts we started to work on our story writing. We wrote our first story using a picture prompt. We then set goals for ourselves during our story writing unit.

Math - This week in Math, we began to learn about fractions. We learned what a numerator, denominator and fraction bar is. We also learned that a numerator number represents the part and the denominator number represents the whole. We will continue with fractions next week.

Science
- This week in Science we continued with our Building and Testing Materials unit. Our building challenge this week was the build a bridge that had to span at least 30 cm and could support at least 1 textbook. We also spent some time showing everyone in the class our playground projects.

Social Studies - This week we continued working on our major Social Studies Cultural Research Project. We will continue to work on the project for the next few weeks.

Health - In health class, we continued looking at the area of relationships.

I will be posting homework this Sunday on the blog. Next week we have two special days to be aware of. If you celebrate Ramadan, you can wear your special clothing on Monday, otherwise, you will be expected to wear your formal uniform. If you celebrate Vaisakhi you can wear your special clothing on Tuesday, otherwise, you will be expected to wear your regular uniform.

I hope everyone has a fabulous weekend and I will see everyone on Monday!

Homework for the Week of April 6 - 9, 2021

 Hello Everyone!

There is going to be no homework assignment this week. Homework is assigned as a review of what we have done the previous week in school and the Grade 3 team has decided that it would be a bit much to ask the students to think back to before our Spring Break. We will resume homework again this coming Sunday.

If you are looking for something to do this week Mathletics has been updated and keeping up with daily reading is always good.

If you have any questions, please let me know!

Miss. Shevchuk

good day!
