November 27 - Learning Update

 Hello Team,

What a fabulous week! I for one, am very glad that Mr. Kenney has allowed us to continue our in-person learning until our winter break. There will be more news and information to come about this from Mrs. Taylor so remember to check your e-mail inboxes.

One major event that happened this week involves our class helping to create the school's first character assembly of the year. Our assembly revolves around the story Be You by Peter H. Reynolds. If you are interested you can find a link to the story read by the author himself here. The link to our virtual assembly was emailed to you earlier this week.

Here is our classroom learning update for the week!

Language Arts - This week in language arts we focused on similes. We practiced writing similes and created writing pieces about our dream dessert using similes, triple scoop words, and our 5 senses.

Math - We finished learning several strategies for completing two-digit addition this week. We began to apply our skills and knowledge to three-digit addition.

Science - This week we continued with our Rocks and Minerals unit. We performed several experiments on the rocks to test and see how hard they are, if they are magnetic, what type of streak they leave, and if they have any carbonates in them. We will continue with our experimenting on the rocks next week as well.

Social Studies - This week we continued learning about services in our communities. We are almost done creating our community service maps.

Health - In health class, we continue to look at the area of wellness choices.

Remember to wear your formal uniform on Monday next week. Next week is also another short week, with no school for students on Friday, December 4. Have a lovely weekend, stay safe out there!

November 13 - Learning Update

 Hello Le Roi Daniels,

I will begin posting learning updates on the last day of every week to keep you updated as to what we have been learning in our busy classroom.

Although it may be dreary, grey and gloomy outside, at Le Roi Daniels we always cheerful and full of brightness. On Monday, November 16, we are going to bring colour and joy to our school by having a casual day where students can wear ANY colour of the rainbow.

This is one way to show our joy and remember we have a “ RAINBOW OF POSSIBILITIES” in our school. Be as creative as you would like! I can hardly wait to see what people wear to school.

Language Arts - We have been focusing on questions, question words, surface, deep questions, and different question formats. We have been working on creating our own quiz about the short story "The King's Taster", which we finished this week and were able to quiz our friends in the class.

Math - We have been working on estimating this week. We have also been working with Mrs. Hull twice a week on math centres, focusing on number sense. Next week we hope to move on to two-digit addition.

Science - This week in science, we wrapped up our first unit of the year, Animal Life Cycles. Next week we will begin learning about Rocks and Minerals.

Social Studies - This week we began learning about services in our communities. The students have been tasked with a chapter-long project that involves them creating a map of a made-up community that would provide a "good quality of life" for its residents. We will continue to work on this unit for the next two weeks.

Health - In health class, we continue to look at the area of wellness choices. This week we investigated unique body characteristics.

This week we also looked at Remembrance Day and Diwali. We created a beautiful Remembrance Day bulletin board which can be seen on the Student's Work page of the blog. We also partook in the creation of the Remembrance Day assembly. For Diwali, we created several masterpieces to help celebrate the festival. Some of these will remain on display in the classroom for another week or two.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Homework for the Week of November 7, due on Friday, November 13

Hello Everybody!

This week our homework is going to be due on Friday, November 13th. This week is a little bit different from other weeks so I have a few reminders. Due to Remembrance Day being on Wednesday, we will have no school that day. We will also have a formal dress day on both Monday and Tuesday this week.

I would also like to send out another reminder to the grownups that the students have started to use their headphones in class every week, so if you are able to send them to school with a pair of headphones as soon as possible, that would be lovely.

Friday, November 13th will be the day of our next spelling test. The words can be found below:

Spelling Tasks: We can recognize and spell words with er and or sounds.

  1. Read your spelling word list and make sure you understand the meaning of each word.

  2. Write each word in your homework notebook and circle the part of the word that has the "er" or "or" sound in it. Challenge: find 3 words, not on any of the spelling lists with these sounds in them.

  3. Choose 8 of your spelling words, and write a sentence for each word. Put a circle around the spelling word in the sentence. Try to challenge yourself and see if you can use two words in one sentence.
Reading Task: We can read silently with increasing confidence and accuracy.
  1. 10 minutes of reading is expected to be completed every night.

  2. Continue to explore the Epic! reading website at home. The link can be found on the Resources page of the blog.
Math Tasks: We can represent and describe numbers to 1000, concretely, pictorially and symbolically.
  1. Represent each of the following numbers in 3 different ways. Remember our anchor chart from the classroom, some possible ways you could represent your number could be in words, with dice, using a picture, base ten blocks, a number story, expanded form, on a number line, or some other creative ways you may think of.

    15, 984, 384, 87, 2, 700

  2. Are the following numbers represented correctly? If they are not represented correctly, fix them.

  3. Continue to work on Mathletics.

Homework for the Week of November 1 - 6th, due on November 6th

   Hello Everybody!

This week our homework is going to be due on Friday, November 6th. Your students will get their homework folder and book back on Monday. If they want to work on their homework ahead of time, please just glue or staple the pages with their work into their homework notebook.

I would also like to send out another reminder to the grownups that the students will begin to use their headphones in class more often, so if you are able to send them to school with a pair of over the ear headphones over the next few weeks that would be lovely.

Friday, November 6th will be the day of our next spelling test. The words can be found below:

Spelling Tasks: I can recognize and spell words with short vowel patterns using i, o, and u.

  1. Read your spelling word list and make sure you understand the meaning of each word.

  2. Write each of your spelling words forwards 2 times, and then backwards once.

  3. Choose 8 of your spelling words, and write a sentence for each word. Put a circle around the spelling word in the sentence. Try to challenge yourself and see if you can use two words in one sentence.
Reading Task: I can read silently with increasing confidence and accuracy.
  1. 10 minutes of reading is expected to be completed every night.

  2. Continue to explore the Epic! reading website at home. The link can be found on the Resources page of the blog.
Math Tasks: I can compare and order numbers to 1000, and I can represent and describe numbers to 1000, concretely, pictorially and symbolically.
  1. Find 5 different 1, 2, or 3 digit numbers around your house. You could find them on food labels, in books, anywhere. Choose if you would like to write your numbers in order from smallest to largest, or largest to smallest. I have put some examples of places you could find numbers below:

This cereal box has the number 100 on it, among other numbers on the side (Nutrition Panel), and bottom where it says the weight of the box contents.

A measuring cup has several different numbers on it that you can use for this activity.

  2. Label the following numbers as even or odd. Remember, you only need to look at the digit in the ones place value spot to determine if the entire number is even or odd.

    102, 847, 394, 33, 393, 476, 90, 108, 836, 331.

  3. Write the following numbers in expanded form. I have shown 2 examples below:

    Examples: 387 = 300 + 80 + 7
                        609 = 600 + 9

    394, 940, 87, 982, 28.

  4. Continue to work on Mathletics. I highly encourage the students to log in to Mathletics and attempt some of the activities, to practice and reinforce some of the concepts that we have learned in class.
Optional Tasks:
  1. Check out the blogs for both Music and French. I have placed the links on the Resource page of this blog.
As per usual, please let me know if you have any questions, and have a wonderful week!! P.S. Do not forget to set your clocks back an hour today!
