Homework for the Week of May 30 - June 4, 2021 - due on Friday, June 4, 202

 Hello!

This week is only a 4 day week, again, with a Professional Development day on Monday. Homework will be due in class on Friday. We will also have our spelling test on Friday as well.

Some reminders for this week: Tuesday - Thursday this week students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt in light of the events that happened over the weekend in Kamloops. They will still be asked to wear their regular uniform bottoms. Friday this week is a casual day because we are having our Sports Day! Room 8 is going to be Team Black for Sports Day so please try and find any black clothing you may have at home to wear for Friday.

Spelling Tasks: We can recognize and spell homonyms (words that sound the same but have different meanings).

  1. Read your spelling word list and make sure you understand the meaning of each word.

  2. Complete 2 of the following activities. As a challenge, I would like you to try and choose two activities that are next to each other. Either one above and the other below, or one on the left and one on the right.

  3. Use all 12 of your spelling words, and write a sentence for each word. Put a circle around the spelling word in the sentence. Try to challenge yourself and see if you can use two words in one sentence.
Literacy Tasks: We can read silently with increasing confidence and accuracy.
  1. 20 minutes of reading is expected to be completed every night.
Math Tasks: We can use tools around us to measure or estimate the length, width and height of objects in our homes.
  1. Make a chart similar to the one below. Find 5 items in your house that you would like to measure. Write down the items in the first column, in the second column write down your estimate for how long, tall or wide the object will be, in the third column I would like you to actually measure the item and record the number. Remember to include your units. I have done 1 example for you.

  2. Use the actual measurements of the items you measured in part 1 and put them in order from largest to smallest.

  3. I would like you to brainstorm some situations in real life where you would need to measure things. Try and come up with at least 3.
Please let me know if you have any questions. I will see everyone on Tuesday!

May 28, 2021 - Learning Update

Hello, Room 8 Team!

I think I can speak for everyone when I say we are very glad to be back together in class. We had a busy week in the classroom. Below is our learning update for the week.

Language Arts - This week in Language Arts we began writing a new story. We have so far focused on planning our story and on creating an exciting beginning.

Math - This week in Math, we began looking at measuring things using centimetres and meters. We practiced using both rulers and meter sticks. We also practiced estimating how to measure these units.

Science
- This week in Science we looked at how our eardrum works. We also took a look at how well sound travels through the air.

Social Studies - This week we looked at what it means to be a global citizen and a Canadian citizen. We also took a look at the Covid-19 vaccine and the impact it is having on our global community.

Some reminders for next week: Tuesday - Thursday this week students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt in light of the events that happened over the weekend in Kamloops. They will still be asked to wear their regular uniform bottoms. Friday this week is a casual day because we are having our Sports Day! Room 8 is going to be Team Black for Sports Day so please try and find any black clothing you may have at home to wear for Friday.

Have a wonderful 3-day weekend. I look forward to seeing everybody back here in June, on Tuesday! Stay safe and wash your hands.

Reminder: Tomorrow is pyjama day or crazy hair day if you would like to participate!

Literacy.

  1. Today in class we discussed how triple scoop words can make our writing more exciting. We also learned how to use Word Hippo to help us find triple scoop words. Copy the following sentences into your notebook and make them more exciting using triple scoop words that you found on Word Hippo. An example has been done for you.

Example: My friend is acting mean.  -------> My friend is acting selfish because they had a bad day.

I saw a really big tower.

    I fell down.

    He was mean to me.

    I am happy.

    I went in the car.

    I saw a bird.

    I am moving houses.

    I was sad.

    I am very mad.

    I am bored.

  2. Use the "Definition" tab on Word Hippo and look up what the following words mean. They are all words that are important for our hearing and sound unit in Science. You do not have to look up a word if you remember what the definition is from class or from earlier this week.

     Math

    1. Write the name of the following fractions.

    2. Draw the following fractions 1 or 2 ways.

    3. Compare the following fractions using these symbols: <, >, or =.

    4. Write a paragraph about the group of cats below. Include 3 - 5 fractions in your writing. There are 10 cats in the picture altogether.

    5. If you would like, create a word problem that uses fractions. Solve it.

You will show me these tasks during attendance tomorrow morning.

     Other Tasks

Learning Tasks for Tuesday, May 18

 Literacy

  1. In class, we talked about events. Events are things that happen, for example: falling off of your bike. We also brainstormed a list of questions that you could answer about an event. We are now going to turn the questions that we answered yesterday into a paragraph. The example we completed in class is below.

You will show me this task during attendance tomorrow morning.

  2. Last week on Thursday, we discussed summarizing. Summarizing is when you talk about the main events or the most important things that happen in a story or a section of text. Summarize the reading below in your writing notebook.

     Math

    1. How are multiplication and division different? How are they the same? Try and come up with one thing that could answer each question and write that down in your math notebook. Try and think back to the conversation we had during our virtual meeting.

    2. Choose one of the following jokes to solve. Write the questions and their answers into your math notebook. If you need, please use a strategy. For these ones, you need to pay attention to the colours!!!

    3. If you would like, write your own division word problem and solve it.
    4. If you would like to play division boom cards with your family you can click here. Make sure that you have clicked on flashcard mode and you have shuffled the cards.

     Other Tasks

Learning Tasks for Monday, May 17

 Literacy

  1. In class, we talked about events. Events are things that happen, for example: falling off of your bike. We also brainstormed a list of questions that you could answer about an event. Choose your own event and answer the following questions about it, do not write a story. If you are having trouble coming up with your own event to write about, write about a child accidentally dropping their ice cream cone on the ground. What is your event? How is the person in the event feeling? What did the person see? What did they hear? What did they taste? What did they touch? What did they smell?

You will show me this task during attendance tomorrow morning.

  2. On Monday last week, we looked at questions and coming up with good questions to ask. Read the following passage and answer the questions below. Try and come up with 1 other question that you could ask your friend about the reading (You should also be able to answer the question by using the information in the reading).

 Math

  1. Choose one of the following jokes to solve. Write the questions and their answers into your math notebook.

  2. If you would like, write your own multiplication word problem and solve it.

Homework for May 16 - 20, 2021 - due on Thursday, May 20, 2021

Hello!

This week is only a 4 day week, with a Professional Development Day on Friday. Thus, our homework will be due on Thursday. You can photograph or scan your homework and email it to me by the end of the day on Thursday, May 20. I have had very few homework submissions from last week. If you are unable to photograph it and email it to me you need to contact me and make other arrangements, please.

We will not have a spelling test this week, however, there will still be spelling tasks to complete. You may complete a spelling test on your own if you would like.

Spelling Tasks: We can recognize and spell words with regular and irregular plural endings.

We can summarize key events in a story that we have read ourselves.
  1. 20 minutes of reading is expected to be completed every night.

  2. Summarize 1 short story that you have recently read either at home or on epic. Remember when we summarize we only focus on important events. You may use pictures, words, or both.

Math Tasks: We can use our knowledge of addition and subtraction to solve math problems involving these operations.
  1. The following page has mixed addition and subtraction problems to solve. Solve all of them. Copy the question and answer into your homework notebook.

  2. Write two of your own word problems. One using addition and one using subtraction. Solve your word problems using a word sentence, pictures and number sentence.
Please let me know if you have any questions, I will see everyone virtually!

Learning Tasks for Friday, May 14

 Literacy

  1. Today we are turning back to the skill we practiced earlier this week, visualization. Your task is to create a piece of art where you visualize either the character you created this week, the setting you created this week, or both. You can complete this task in your notebook or on a separate piece of paper. You can use coloured pencil crayons, markers, or whatever other supplies you have at home.

This task is meant to be a fun wrap-up for the week. Remember to include all of the details you wrote about in your two writing pieces.

 Math

  1. Today we are going to be working on pages that have both addition and subtraction problems all mixed together. Some strategies we talked about in class were:

-Before looking at the question look at the sign
-Underline or circle the symbolic the question
-Complete all of the addition questions first and then complete all of the subtraction questions.

Try using these when you complete the questions below. You only need to complete one page of questions. Please copy the question and answer into your math notebooks, or you can print off the pages and staple them in.

 Other Tasks

  1. Remember to submit your homework for the week before you go to bed and check out the FrenchMusic, and Phys. Ed. blogs for extra optional activities.

Learning Tasks for Thursday, May 13

 Literacy

  1. Turn the writing you did yesterday into a paragraph. Again, we want to show our audience the setting, not just tell them where it is. The example we did in class is posted below for ideas. Please complete the 5 - 7 sentences in your writing notebook. Please do not write more than 10 sentences about your setting. You do not have to write about all of the questions you answered yesterday, but remember you want to be descriptive without telling us your exact setting. You will show me this task during attendance tomorrow morning.  This is our not very good, boring setting description.:

The story takes place at the beach.  Below is what we turned it into:

It was a hot, sunny and windy afternoon. It was about 35 degrees Celsius outside on the sand. I can see birds flying in the sky, the water, starfish and beach toys. I can smell the water and people barbecuing fish far away from me. I can hear people laughing at their friend’s joke-telling, waves crashing, and birds squawking. I was eating my picnic sandwich and accidentally ate some sand. When I went in the water I could feel fish nibbling on my toes and I found a seashell that feels as smooth as leather.

  2. Summarizing means we can retell a story by focusing on the major events that happen in the story. You can summarize a story by using pictures, words, or both. Summarize the story we read today in class The Darkest Dark by Chris Hadfield. You can rewatch the story here. Remember to only focus on the major events in the story and not on every single small detail.

 Math

  1. Today we have a miniature rainbow for our math practice! Answer 3 questions of each colour in your math notebook. You must write down the question and the answer. Please show your work (show me your borrowing).

  2. Solve the following subtraction code word page to figure out the answer to the joke. Please write each question and answer into your math notebook.

  3. If you would like, write your own subtraction word problem and solve it using pictures, a number sentence and a word sentence.

 Other Tasks

  1. Remember to keep working on your homework for the week and check out the FrenchMusic, and Phys. Ed. blogs for extra optional activities.

Learning Tasks for Wednesday, May 12

 Literacy

  1. Create your own setting or choose one from this video. You may draw your setting if you would like but we will be doing this in detail on Friday. Answer the following questions in full sentences about your setting in your writing notebook:

Where is the setting? (i.e. city, house, forest, castle, outer space, etc.)
Is it in the past, present or future?
What is the weather like? Temperature?
What could you see? hear? taste? touch? smell?
    Who is there?
What time of day is it?
    Describe your setting.
Any other details you might want to include.

  2. Getting to know a character helps us understand why they do certain things in a story and helps us learn how to create characters when we write our own stories. Create a character map for the main character in a story you are reading. An example is posted below. Please complete this activity in your writing notebook.

 Math

  1. Rainbow math practice! Answer 3 questions from each colour. You should be answering 18 questions altogether. Solve the questions using a method of your choice. Please write both the question and answer into your math notebook.

You will show me this task during attendance tomorrow morning.

  2. If you would like, write your own addition word problem and solve it using pictures, a number sentence and a word sentence.

Learning Tasks for Tuesday, May 11

 Literacy

  1. Create your own character and describe how your character is feeling. DO NOT just tell me how they are feeling. You must write one paragraph (5 sentences) using the show, don't tell strategies that we reviewed in class. You can also draw a quick sketch of your character if you would like, however, we will be doing this in more detail on Friday.

  2. Read the following passage and draw a quick sketch of what you visualize when you read it. Label any details.

 Math

  1. Find at least 10 different 2-D shapes around your house. Sketch them into your math notebook and label where you found them and what item they are (i.e. I can find a TV in my Living Room and it is a rectangle). Once you have found and sketched your shapes, sort them 1 or 2 ways using some of the strategies we discussed in class. The chart below might help you name some of your polygons.

You will show me this task during attendance tomorrow morning.

 Other Tasks

  1. Remember to keep working on your homework for the week and check out the FrenchMusic, and Phys. Ed. blogs for extra optional activities.

Online Learning for May 10 - 14

Hello Everyone!

First, I would like to say Happy Mother's Day to all of the mothers of Room 8. I hope you have a fabulous day and enjoy your gift (I would wait until it gets a bit warmer to plant it).

Virtual learning is upon us again. I know that we all rocked it last time, so this time should be just as awesome. I was asked to post a plan for the week every Sunday that we are completing online learning. This post contains the plan for the week if you click here. Below is a picture snapshot of the weekly plan.

After every lesson, I will be adding anything the students might need to help them complete their work to the blog. I will create one blog post for every day, that way there is not too much going on on the blog.

Please check out my previous post for our homework for this week and the instructions involved in that.

I will see everyone tomorrow at 8:30 am for our first meeting of the day. If you have any questions or comments, please email me.

Miss. Shevchuk

Homework for the Week of May 9 - 14, 2021 - due on Friday, May 14

Hello!

Teachers were asked to assign students homework for our weeks of online learning in addition to the tasks we will be completing during the day. You can photograph or scan your homework and email it to me by Friday, May 14. We will not have a spelling test this week because it will take too long to complete virtually during our literacy block, however, there will still be spelling tasks to complete. You may complete a spelling test on your own if you would like.

I will be posting updated information for our virtual learning this week in a few hours.

Spelling Tasks: We can recognize and spell words with re, dis, un, im, and in prefixes.

We can write an original story that is exciting and engaging for our audience.
  1. 20 minutes of reading is expected to be completed every night.

  2. I would like you to finalize the story we have been working on in class for the last several weeks (for most of you this story should be in your writing notebook if you did not bring the book with this in it home, do not worry about this task). Create an exciting ending that does not just abruptly stop the story but leaves the reader happy. Also, go through and check for triple scoop words and other details.

Math Tasks: We can use our knowledge of the relationship between standard time units to solve problems.
  1. Choose 2 of the following word problems to solve. Tom has been playing soccer every day after school for the past 1 week and 7 days. How many days has he been playing soccer together? Anna loves to read. She read one book every week for 14 days. How many books does she read? Abbey is so excited about her birthday. Her birthday is on March 18th, it is currently March 11th. How many days until her birthday?
  2. Write your own word problem using time and solve it.
Please let me know if you have any questions, I will see everyone virtually!
